Education

Hello, my name is Steven Kelly and I attend Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. I am majoring in political science, but am also pursuing a secondary major in international studies and minors in history and anthropology. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout my academic career, but I also recognize the value of extracurricular activities.

Experience

I have helped many students with their university coursework at K-State, covering subjects from Japanese history to English to biology. Last spring, I taught an academic/career decisions class to a group of college freshmen--an experience that was both challenging and rewarding. I also work at my campus' career center; basically, I help students who are unsure of their major and/or potential career on a one-on-one basis. While I'm a very strong student overall, I am particularly skilled in English, social science (political science, history, anthropology), and natural science. Writing exceptional papers and essays has been a critical part of my collegiate success, and I'm quite capable of passing on my expertise to others. Overall the focus of my studies has been internationally based; I've taken courses in Middle Eastern politics, American foreign policy, comparative politics, and global politics, as well as Chinese, Japanese, South Asian, and Middle Eastern history. Next semester I will be taking courses in international conflict and South Asian politics. As you may have noticed, I've managed to develop somewhat of a specialization on Asia. All the same, being a good tutor isn't necessarily all about being a great student (though it doesn't hurt). I think the most important characteristic of being a tutor is solid communication skills. If a person can't relate to each individual on his or her own level, then it could seem like the "tutor" is more like a second teacher. Working at the career center has given me valuable experience in communicating with students who need a little help, and I feel like I am more than capable helping students in need--whether they need test pointers, paper critiques, or help with understanding more complicated theories and concepts.

Hobbies

While I do take my studies seriously, I definitely understand the need for balance in one's personal life. I was on my high school's cross country, basketball, and golf teams and still enjoy playing sports now and then. I'm a lover of the arts; music, literature, and creative writing are very important parts of my life. One of my favorite things to do having movie marathons with my friends (when we can find the time)--and though I enjoy movies of all genres, my favorites and fantasy/sci-fi, dramas, and documentaries. Also, I follow several TV shows when I can, especially ABC's "Lost" (which is as intelligent as it is entertaining). Overall, I'm a generally laid back person who enjoys spending time with friends. Still, no matter how relaxed I am, I definitely know how and when to roll up my sleeves and get to work. I hope you choose me to help out!
