Experience

Well for starters, my name is Ciera. I am currently a full time para at an elementary school here in Manhattan. I have completed 4 1/2 years at Kansas State University towards my degree in education. I went to high school in Topeka, Ks. I’ve been working with kids for about five years now. In high school, I was a music tutor for elementary students. I taught clarinet and alto saxophone lessons. In the summer of 2012 I was an activities instructor at a 4-h camp. I instructed various areas including rifles, archery, leadership courses, canoeing, crafts, and environmental education. The age groups that I taught ranged from kindergarten to adults. I have tutored high school students in Algebra for about two years now. I thoroughly enjoy working with kids. I believe that their undying desire to learn is an opportunity to allow them to be who they want to be. I believe that there is no such thing as an unintelligent child. Every child has a desire to learn, you just have to use the right approach. I am a firm believer that with proper practice and study techniques a student can excel in any subject whether or not he or she enjoys said subject. They key is to find the one thing that the student likes about the subject and grow on that. For example, I wasn’t particularly fond of history in high school. However, by working with the teacher, I realized that instead of doing daily assignments, like my peers, I worked much more efficiently and gained more from sitting down and completing all of the assignments in one sitting. Yes, this took a lot of hard work and focus on my part, but it allowed me to excel in a subject that I would have otherwise failed. The key to success in education is a constant renewed sense of having gained something from what is being taught. If the student doesn’t feel that he or she is gaining something from his or her learning experience, he or she will find something else that interests the student and not apply the proper amount of focus on the subjects that bore him or her. This type of behavior is common among most students but most prominent in those who are diagnosed with ADHD. As an adult who grew up with ADHD, I know what it is like to have problems focusing in class and the frustration of teachers not understanding my condition. I hope that this brief description of my approach to structured learning environments helps you to find the proper tutor for your son or daughter.
